Flawed and Fabulous!
I am a wife, a mother of 3 amazing young adult children, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a certified life coach and a woman trying to navigate this world of emotions that are constantly changing.
I have been a life coach working with teens and young adults struggling with anxiety for over 2 years. Along the way, I started losing my hair. After several doctor visits with no answers, (but a lot of added discouragement), I had almost given up. Instead, I used the skills I already had as a life coach to navigate my hair loss journey from an emotional and mental standpoint. (Anyone who has experienced hair loss knows how much it affects your mental health.)
After 11 months with no answers, and still daily handfuls of hair falling out, I tried one last time to get some answers. I was blessed to find a dermatologist who was compassionate and listened to me. After I took off my alternative hair and he looked at my bio hair, I remember the compassion in his eyes as he said, “You have significant hair loss. There isn’t anywhere on your head that isn’t affected and your hair pull test is positive everywhere.” He was more upset than I was. Actually, I wasn’t upset at all. I already knew I had significant hair loss, after all, I had been losing handfuls every day for 11 months at that point. Instead of being upset, I felt heard and seen for the first time by a doctor in almost a year. Those words and that moment were healing for me.
He did a biopsy and the results came back as alopecia areata. He said I was the worst case he had seen. Long story short, I have opted out of treatment. Due to the extent of my hair loss, the only option had too many risks and side effects for me to be comfortable with. Instead of focusing on regrowing my hair through risky medication, I am choosing to focus on embracing my beauty with or without bio hair and helping other women who are also facing hair loss.
My background as an anxiety coach, a nervous system coach, a woman with alopecia, and discovering wigs has prepared me to help other women and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been lead line upon line to this point!
When I shaved my hair off, it felt freeing and I cried tears of relief, not sadness. Sometimes I wear a wig, and sometimes I don’t. I want to help other women find that same freedom and compassion for themselves.
XOXO, Cory
